History of Valentine Medical Centre
Valentine Medical Centre predates the NHS which first opened for patients in 1947 at Valentine House located on Rochdale Road. Dr Doohan an Irishman came over to Manchester and opened a GP practice from his own home. In the mid 1950s Dr Rainsbury (who served as a surgeon on the Atlantic convoys and D-Day landings in the second world war) joined forces with Dr Doohan and brought with him patients from the Middleton area. The third GP to join the practice was Dr Clegg in the 1970s and the fourth Dr Fallon in the 1980s. The partnership then appointed their first two female GPs Dr Hargreaves in the 1990s (retired in 2024 after 30 years of service) and Dr Ritches (who emigrated to New Zealand in 2016). Another long serving GP partner appreciated by patients was Dr Storey who retired in 2022.
The practice moved away from paper records in the 1990s and became fully computerised. Another significant event in the practice's life was moving down the road to its current purpose built building in 1999. The practice continued to grow and develop under its current practice manager Anthony Foster. Many of its current administrative staff have served patients at Valentine Medical Centre for many years in a stable, positive team environment.
The practice was accredited as a training practice in 2010 and continues to train doctors in their various stages of training today. The team has a full compliment of practice nurses, associate physician, focused care worker, practice pharmacist and a medicine management team. The current GP partners are Dr Gardner, Dr Blockley and Dr Harniess who stand on the shoulders of those who went before them in trying to provide a high standard of compassionate care for its patients.
